Betty Lou Smith
1939-2025
Betty Lou Smith, age 85, of LaVale, Md., passed away Wednesday, September 3, 2025, in Cumberland, Md.
Born October 3, 1939, in Shady Bower, Md., she was the daughter of the late Granvil Booth and Mary Catherine Wiles Cavender.
Betty was a graduate of Hancock High School Class of 1957.
She worked at various restaurants in Allegany County.
She was a member of the Solid Rock Independent Baptist Church, Corriganville, Md.
She was an avid bowler and played in several bowling leagues. She enjoyed watching dirt track racing in Bedford and Cumberland. She enjoyed NASCAR and was big fan of Tony Stewart. She also enjoyed walking and hiking.
Betty is survived by one daughter, Barb Smith of LaVale, Md.; one son, Wesley Leon Smith and wife Sandra of Sanford, Fla.; one brother, Dennis Cavender and wife Pam of Mercersburg, Pa.; one sister, Linda Golden of Cumberland, Md.; four grandchildren, Shannon, Jennifer, Stephen and Jeremy; two great-grandchildren, Olivia and Jordan; and numerous nieces and nephews with a special thanks to niece and nephew Bev and Doyle.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Leon Drake Smith; four brothers, Harold, Jesse, Russell and Mike Cavender; one sister, Catherine Lucille Knox; and one brother-in-law, John Golden.
Funeral service was held on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Grove-Rogowski Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, Hancock, Md. Pastor Tim Pratt officiated. Burial followed at Fairview Christian Cemetery, Artemas, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Betty’s name can be made to any local animal shelters.
