Hunter’s has new owners with plans with new additions to historic hardware business

One of the oldest continually operating businesses in Morgan County has entered a new era with new owners.

Local businessman Jay Patel purchased Hunter’s Hardware, located on Washington and Independence Streets, from Danny Davison on July 23. Patel has owned and operated the 7-11 in downtown Berkeley Springs for more than a decade in addition to owning several other business and residential properties in the county.

Davison has owned the hardware store since ## when he transitioned from being a longtime employee to boss.

Under Patel’s ownership the downtown hardware and building supply business will be managed by Jay and Biren Patel. Davison will keep working at the store on a part-time basis as he heads into semi-retirement.

“One thing we want everyone to know is that Hunter’s Hardware is, and still will be the same Hunter’s Hardware you’ve known and loved. This means the same screws, tools, supplies, gear, friendly service, and commitment to our community aren’t going anywhere,” the store said in a social media post announcing the official change in ownership last week.

“For more than 150 years, Hunter’s Hardware has been part of Berkeley Springs. Jay wants to honor that legacy while building on it for the future for at least 150 years more,” they said in the announcement.

Upcoming changes under the Patel ownership could include the addition of a U-Haul Service, a new drinks cooler, additional fishing gear, packaged waters, firewood for campers and a new ReadyIce cooler outside for contractors and customers.

The new owners have also promised free coffee every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
