On June 1, the Maryland Park Service began hosting a monthly drive through to the Point Kilo Overlook at Sideling Hill Creek State Park. The drive through is the first Saturday of each month and runs through October, running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The path to the overlook will be open for visitors to drive through and parking will be at the top of the park, just a short distance from the overlook.
All vehicles must vacate the overlook by 3 p.m., the Park Service said.
Should the upper lot reach capacity, visitors are also still welcome to park in the day-use parking lot and walk up the hill, which is about 0.6 miles at a steep 9% incline.
Sideling Hill Creek State Park returned to the Maryland State Park Service’s stewardship in 2021.
Point Kilo Monument honors Maryland Army National Guardsman Command Sergeant Major Roger W. Haller, who was killed in action on January 20, 2007, in Iraq. He was assigned to the 70th Regiment Regional Training Institute, Maryland Army National Guar, in Reiserstown.
According to the DNR website, the Potomac River Overlook area was chosen for his memorial because it was Haller’s favorite places to train his guardsmen.
Sideling Hill Creek State Park is located at 11110 Ziegler Road SE, Hancock.
