McCusker awarded band scholarship

The Herbert A. Young Scholarship Fund announced the 2026 Music Scholarship was awarded to Brooklyn McCusker.

The annual scholarship is awarded to a senior member of the Hancock High School band and each year, the eligible band member is selected by band director Caleb Wescott.

The scholarship is designed to honor Herbert Young’s outstanding 52-year career as a band director.

McCusker has been a member of the Hancock Middle-Senior High School band for seven years and during her time in band had served as Drum Major, played trumpet, and primarily the baritone.

“Brooklyn has been an advocate for all of the members of our program, and a strong voice for our ensembles,” Wescott said.

He added McCusker is an athlete and strong student who has worked hard to balance and carry her responsibilities as a band member.

Her natural ability as a musician and leadership instincts make her a role model for fellow and future members of the band, Wescott said.

In the fall, McCusker will be attending Hood College where she will pursue a  Bachelor’s Degree in nursing and a Master’s Degree as a Nurse Practioner.

This year, the Herbert A. Young Scholarship Fund is grateful to have contributed $900 to help and encourage McCusker’s pursuit of her educational goals.

The family of Herbert Young would like to thank all who helped make a difference in the life of a very deserving student.
