Hancock escapes flooding, damage from storm

by Geoff Fox

Heavy rains sweeping through the Hancock area on Tuesday, April 2, didn’t cause much damage to the area as seen in other parts of the state and region. There were also some rain showers on Wednesday, April 3, mixed in.

Hancock escaped any major flooding last week after heavy rains on Tuesday, April 2, and light rain on Wednesday, April 3. The Little Tonoloway Creek in Widmeyer Park only got out of its banks near the bridge on Main Street and the Potomac River reached the lower parking area for the boat ramp.

While there was flooding in the region and some road closures within Washington County due to flooding, the Potomac River and tributaries did not flood in Hancock.

According to the National Weather Service Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service, the Potomac River at Hancock crested at 19.5 feet on Thursday, April 4, around noon. The gauge is at the bottom of Church Street.

At the boat ramp, the river has reached the lower parking level for the ramp.

Tonoloway Creek, which has a gauge near the town’s wastewater lagoon, peaked at nine feet. There was no reading from NWS for Little Tonoloway Creek in Widmeyer Park, but the creek was running high and had spilled outside its banks near the bridge and the playground equipment. The creek normally has a waterfall near the pavilions, however the falls were underwater with the amount of water running over them.

The mouth of the Little Tonoloway had flooded near the boat ramp of the Potomac River, Thursday morning.
