PSP respond to fatal I-70 crash in Crystal Spring

The Pennsylvania State Police, along with fire and rescue units from three towns responded to a fatal vehicle accident on westbound Interstate 70 in the Crystal Spring area on Monday, October 30.

According to State Police, the crash occurred as an unidentified vehicle was traveling westbound in I-70 just before 6:30 a.m. Monday morning at a high rate of speed around a right-hand curve in the roadway with a wet roads and foggy conditions.

The unidentified driver lost control and went off the left side of the roadway, striking the guardrail and riding along the guardrail.

Police said the vehicle then went across the right side of the roadway and hit the embankment before rolling over and sliding back on to the roadway, coming to a rest on its roof in the left lane.

A second unidentified vehicle was also traveling westbound in the left lane and did not see the first vehicle on the roadway due to the fog and its lights being disabled from the first impact.

The second vehicle then struck the first’ s left side with the front right, pushing it into the right lane of travel. The second vehicle spun off the left side of the roadway and hit the guardrail with its rear end.

A third unidentified vehicle was traveling westbound in the right lane and slowed to see if the second vehicle needed help, unable to see the first vehicle. The third vehicle then hit the front end of the first vehicle with its front end, pushing it forward, and both coming to rest against each other.

Police said the first two vehicles received major damage with the third only moderate damage.

The unidentified driver of the first vehicle and an unidentified passenger in the first vehicle were deceased and not wearing seatbelts, police said.

The unidentified driver and unidentified passenger in the second vehicle received minor to moderate injuries while wearing seatbelts.

The third unidentified driver was not injured and was wearing a seatbelt.

McConnellsburg, Needmore, and Breezewood Fire Departments and EMS assisted at the scene.

Police were withholding any identification of the deceased due to pending notification of next of kin.
