The Hancock Panthers’ track team took a short ride up I-70 to Warfordsburg to take part in a four-team meet at Southern Fulton on Tuesday, April 7.
Hancock was the lone school from Maryland at the meet as Southern Fulton, Mt. Union, and South Huntington were all Pennsylvania schools.
Coach Greg Cartrette said the teams had “another great meet” with several athletes obtaining several personal bests.
Landyn Clark took three first place finishes with a personal best of 20’2” in the long jump, another personal best of 38’8” in the triple jump, and 5’8” in the high jump.
In the boys 4×100 relay, the Panthers took home second place with Jayten McCarty and the first anchor, Ethan Hill as the second anchor, Conner Pogue as the third anchor, and Landy Clark as the fourth anchor.
Leland Clark got second place in the discus with a personal best of 121 feet. His second-place finish was out of 21 participants.
Conner Pogue finished fourth out of 30 participants in the 200-meter event.
Ethan Hill took fourth out 21 participants in the shot-put event.
Cartrette said freshman girls Maia Godinez and Xia Hixon are getting better each day in the girls 100- and 200-meter sprints and Brody Morris, Nathan Rhodes, and Kyle Squires are each showing the coaches they determined to get better and improve their events.
“Hancock goes to meets and we show up with 8-10 players and we are facing teams with 20-30 players and we just keep making it happen,” Cartrette said in an email to The Hancock News.
At the meets, Hancock is facing 3A and 4A schools and Cartrette said the Panthers are “giving them everything we have to show that Hancock, might be small, but we have the heart to compete and not back down.”
He added he and Coach Brittany Waugh are “so proud” of each of their student-athletes in what they have accomplished, are accomplishing, and will accomplish in the future.
