Kirkwood house future still in question

by Geoff Fox

The Town of Hancock bought the house at 5229 Creek Road, right beside Kirkwood Park about nine years ago.

Almost a decade ago, the Town of Hancock purchased the house at 5229 Creek Road, just outside Kirkwood Park, to allow for more parking at the pavilion.

However, in the nine years the town has owned the property, the house has sat abandoned and empty. The lawn is still maintained.

There have been ideas tossed around for use of the house, from declaring it surplus property to allowing youth sports leagues and scouts to use it as a meeting place to storage for youth sports, and a town composting site.

The only suggestion that came up and was actually decided on was demolition of the house.

That was in 2022 and the house is still standing three years later.

Town Manager Mike Faith said there had been a decision to demolish the house, however the town never pursued issuing a request for quote to do the demolition work.

The town “lost focus” on the project, he said.

Faith said the subject could be added to the agenda for the May town meeting on Tuesday, May 13.
