Great Cove Farm Market opens in Warfordsburg

by Lisa Schauer

Pennsylvania Dutch-style Great Cove Farm Market held its grand opening in Warfordsburg on Thursday, January 23 through Saturday, January 25.

Inside the remodeled building formerly known as Dott’s, a dazzling array of fresh produce, scratch-made pies, jams, bulk goods, candies and snack mixes greeted the eye, with samples beckoning from tasteful displays.

Customers lined up to place their orders for hot and cold hoagies, sandwiches, thin crust pizza, soups, salad bar, and food bar items, all made fresh on site using local ingredients.

Gleaming dairy cases and freezers were filled with containers of soups, dips, entrees, raw milk, yogurt, ice cream, deviled eggs, salads and desserts.

The deli was laden with a variety of fresh meats and cheeses. Samples and sale prices enticed shoppers.

All items on the menu are prepared in the bakery and kitchen on site. Store items are made in-house or come from the central Pennsylvania Dutch counties of Lancaster, Lebanon, and Franklin, along with some from Maryland and New York.

Purveyors include Dutch Valley Foods, Grandma’s Jams, Country Creamery, Stoltzfur’s yogurt, and more.

Co-owners Lamar Martin and son Brenton Martin run the food operation, in tangent with a team of skillful bakers and cooks.

Lamar ran the pizza and produce sections at the Pennsylvania Dutch Market in Hagerstown for many years.

When the building came up for sale, they took the opportunity to start a Pennsylvania Dutch-style market in Fulton County.

“Our business mission is to help families eat at home together,” said Lamar, in between greeting guests and helping out in the kitchen.

A new greenhouse has been constructed next to the store, along a rural part of U.S. 522 North just over the Pennsylvania state line. It will include bedding plants, and a full line of nursery plants in season, according to Martin.
