Hancock Middle-Senior High School to get extra funding, services as Community School

by Geoff Fox

Hancock Middle-Senior High School has received grant funding to be designated as a “Community School”, said school officials on Tuesday. The grant and designation will enable the school to implement a range of initiatives at addressing the diverse needs of its students and fostering a culture of community engagement and empowerment.

“Maryland continues to prioritize community schools through the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future. This landmark legislation is designed to improve the quality of education for Mayland students and close achievement gaps,” the Maryland Department of Education says in their explanation of the Community School concept.

“Included in this legislation are Concentration of Poverty grants for schools that serve large populations of students experiencing poverty. These grants aim to serve students, families, and the community by establishing community schools,” state officials explain.

“While all schools provide support to students, community schools work in collaboration with community partners, local governments, and other stakeholders to provide wraparound services that address barriers to learning and success.”

A fuller article about the grant and Community School impact on Hancock will appear in a later edition.
