Demolition started on collapsed building

by Geoff Fox
Demolition work began last week on 55 West Main Street after it had collapsed on itself earlier in the week. The sidewalk in front of the building had been fenced off and a board was placed across the door later in the week and by 9 a.m. on Friday, March 29, Allegany Wrecking and Salvage had begun tearing into the building.

A crew of three people were in the building in a cherry picker working to knock cinder blocks off the wall and cut the beams in the floor.

As the blocks were removed from the wall, they were tossed onto the pile of debris at the front of the building.

As the building is being demolished, Main Street from Taney Street to Fulton Street
is closed to thru traffic and the sidewalk in front of 55 West Main Street is closed.

Main Street from Church Street to Taney Street is only open to local traffic and for businesses and residential parking.

In a text message to The Hancock News, Town Manager Mike Faith said weather permitting, the demolition work is set to resume tomorrow, Thursday, April 4. photos by Geoff Fox/The Hancock News
