Mother Nature gave the Hancock area a cold, wet treat on Saturday, January 6, with the first snowfall of 2024. It was also one of the first real measurable snows in exactly two years. The last measurable snow started Thursday, January 6, 2022, through the following morning.
Totals from the National Weather Service and around the area ranged from four to eight inches in the Hancock and Warfordsburg areas.
With the snow falling on a Saturday, schools in Washington County and in the Southern Fulton School District were on time Monday morning, however Morgan County schools were on a two-hour delay.
There weren’t many incidents in the Hancock area with only a handful of calls for the Hancock Fire Company.
Hancock police assisted with a vehicle stuck in the snow on the pickleball court, 4-wheelers on Main Street, and an accident at the 2-mile marker on westbound I-70 on Saturday.
Maryland State Police instituted a snow emergency plan that was put in place on Saturday morning, January 6, and lifted Sunday morning, January 7.
Tuesday’s snow
A second storm hit the Hancock area on Tuesday morning brining more snow before giving way to rain and higher temperatures.
The storm started off as snow in the early part of the morning, covering streets and roads in the area.
Schools in Southern Fulton were closed Tuesday because of the weather, however school in Washington County and neighboring Morgan County were on time.
Parents in the Hancock area took to social media to voice their displeasure with Washington County Public Schools keeping Hancock open at the regular time.
