Fire and rescue companies from multiple states responded to Casper Road in Hancock last Thursday, November 16 for a fully-involved structure fire that ultimately destroyed a family home.
According to the Office of the State Fire Marshal, the fire was reported by the homeowner Charles Conley around 1 p.m. on Thursday. Fire Marshal officials said the fire started on the back porch of the single-family home in the 4000 block of Casper Road.
Preliminary investigation results from the fire show the blaze began accidentally on the rear deck when the homeowner was trying to burn fringes from a rug that was sitting on a plastic container. He attempted to extinguish the fire with a garden hose but was unable to get it under control.
Fire units from Hancock, Washington County, Fulton County, Pa., Morgan County, W.Va. and other areas responded to the blaze and were able to get the dwelling fire under control within an hour. A total of 38 firefighters responded to the fire, said state officials.
The home is considered a total loss, with over $200,000 worth of damage. The occupants are being assisted by families. No injuries were reported during the incident.
