Pennland Pure wins top cheddar prize in national competition

Lanco-Penland Cooperative’ s local cheese plant, Pennland Pure, placed again in several categories at the American Cheese Society Annual Conference held in Des Moines, Iowa on July 19.

Each year this event is highlighted by the annual cheese competition that allows cheesemakers to showcase their talents and work as leaders within the industry. The competition is the largest event of its kind for American made cheese.

This year over 1,400 cheeses were anonymously submitted and graded from an esteemed panel of 30 judges. Pennland Pure’ s Sharpsburg Cheddar won two 1st place awards in each of the Aged Cheddar categories positioning them above Cabot Creamery and Satori Foods. The Sharpsburg Cheddar was named after the historic town of Sharpsburg, Md. Pennland Pure placed 3rd with their Provolone in the Pasta Filata Types.

“This achievement is a testament to our incredibly dedicated staff. The passion to produce excellence can be found in all our products and every employee contributes to these achievements,” said Kurt Williams, Lanco-Pennland’s general manager.

Products are also available at Mr. Hardware in Hancock, Horst Meats in Hagerstown, Md., and Battleview Market located in Sharpsburg, Md.
