Harrisburg man flown to hospital after accident

A Harrisburg, Pa., man was flown to an Altoona hospital after a motorcycle accident in Big Cove Tannery on Sun- day, July 23, around 11:21 a.m.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, a 2012 Harley- Davidson Sportster motorcycle, driven by Claude E. Carman, 72, of Harrisburg, was traveling south on Great Cove Road in the Big Cove Tannery area as a 2011 Ford Escape was traveling north.

Police said Carmen was negotiating a right curve and as the road straightened out, for an unknown reason, ended up traveling in the northbound lane.

The motorcycle then struck the passenger side of the Escape, police said.

Carmen’ s motorcycle slid around the SUV and came to a final rest on the northbound shoulder of Great Cove Road.

Police said Carmen was flown to UPMC Altoona for suspected major injuries. Police added he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The motorcycle had to be towed from the scene.

Needmore Volunteer Fire Company and Ambulance assisted at the scene.
