1957-2023
Edward Sylvester Cain, Jr., age 65 of Milton, W.Va., passed away on Sunday, January 1, 2023.
He was born October 21, 1957 in Berkeley Springs. W.Va., a son of the late Edward Sylvester Cain, Sr. and Emma Lee Kaylor Cain.
He is preceded in death by two sisters, Linda Sue Householder and Luella Cain Spellman.
He is survived by his wife, Shelia Ann Davis Cain; two daughters, Magan Hobbs and Jennifer Cain; one son, Michael Smith, four grandchildren, Cain Michael, Logan Hobbs, Dominick Crank and Caleb Hobbs; one sister, Esta Lee Cain (Alan Thatcher); nieces Amy Sue Householder (Mark Silver), Sammi Lee Johnson (Kirk) and Stephanie Baez (Carlos); nephews Joseph Leary (Leslee), Bradley Leary (Maricel), and Jim Bob Householder (Sarah) and a host of grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.
He grew up in New Hope exploring the fields, hills, woods and creeks, often in the company of his close cousins and neighbors. After losing his father at the early age of nine, he was raised by his mother, with ample assistance from his Grandmother Icy (Mary Michael Cain). After graduation from Berkeley Springs High School, he was employed at CSX in Martinsburg and eventually was transferred to Huntington area where he lived and worked for more than 30 years. Following CSX, he was a heavy equipment operator and then worked at Teays Valley Center for 15 years in maintenance and patient transport. In Milton, W.Va., he met the love of his life, Shelia, and together they raised her daughter, Magan. He and Shelia adopted their grandson Michael, now 12, who was the light of his life. He was an avid and skilled hunter, fisherman, and gardener, as well as a good cook. There was not a broken thing he couldn’t fix or a project he could not complete. He is remembered for his storytelling, irrepressible sense of humor, ever-present smile, and big loving heart and for ending his conversations with “I love you.”
After a viewing in Milton, W.Va on January 5, he was brought home to Berkeley Springs where family and friends met for a viewing, followed by a graveside service at Michael Family Cemetery, on January 7. A graveside service was conducted by George McVey. Mark Silver played guitar and sang 3 songs: Knock, Knock, Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door, Country Roads and May the Circle Be Unbroken.
For fellowship, the family chose to attend the Benefit Spaghetti Dinner at First United Methodist Church, in tribute to and paying forward the well-lived life of their beloved, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend. Details in Milton, W.Va. were handled by Wallace Funeral Home and in Berkeley Springs by Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center.
