Rachel Rosalie Gray
1927-2026
Rachel Rosalie Gray, age 99, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died on Friday, September 4, 2026 at her home.
Born September 3, 1927 in Sylvan, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Benjamin F. and Effie C. Rager Shives.
Rachel was a high school graduate. She was employed from 1944-1947 at Sagel’s Restaurant in Hancock, Md. From 1947-1962 she worked at Interwoven Hosiery Mill in Berkeley Springs and from 1963-1994 went to work at Yost Building Supply in Berkeley Springs, W.Va. She rounded out her career at Belk’s Department Store in Winchester, Va., from 1994-1998.
She also enjoyed babysitting, sewing, crocheting and baking. Rachel was a volunteer with the Berkeley Springs Fire Department and Alderton Dawson American Legion Auxiliary Unit #60 in Berkeley Springs. She was a member of the Berkeley Springs Church of Christ for over 50 years.
She is survived by her daughter, Victoria R. Luttrell of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; two granddaughters, Lisa Luttrell and Lora L. Tolley (Russell); two great-grandchildren, Carter Tolley and Kaitlyn Tolley, and fur babies, CoCo and Mr. Grant.
In addition to her parents, Rachel was preceded in death by her husband, Junior O. Gray; eight sisters, Louise Stahl, Ethel Williams, Alice Smith Stephens, Iva Seiders, Agnes Ward, Ruth Barnhart, Ellen Jane Carty and Betty Earnest and two brothers, Benjamin H. Shives and Robert D. Shives, who was Rachel’s twin.
Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, September 15, 2026 at 11 a.m. at Berkeley Springs Church of Christ, 290 S. Green Street, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., with Joshua Hetrick officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday, September 14, 2026 from 3-7 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, W.Va. and from 10-11 a.m. on Tuesday at the church prior to the service. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery.
