by Geoff Fox

The Hancock Panthers track team took to the track at South High last Wednesday, May 6, for the Washington County Public Schools Championships and to participate in a senior recognition event.

Each school’s seniors were recognized at the event and were escorted by their parents. Ethan Hill and Landyn Clark were the only seniors for Hancock.

Ethan Hill, being escorted by his parents, was among the county track senior athletes recognized at the County Championships last Wednesday, May 6, at South Hagerstown. Hill and Landyn Clark were the only two Hancock seniors on the track team. Picture by Hancock Track.

Coach Greg Cartrette said the team had a great county championship and is proud of each student-athlete for the work they’ve put into the county championships.

“Almost all of our student-athletes placed or had a [personal best] at the meet,” he said.

Landyn Clark placed third in long jump and sixth in triple jump; Leland Clark placed fourth in discus and seventh in shot put, which included a personal best; Jayten McCarty placed fifth in high jump, as well as a personal best; Xia Hixon achieved a personal best in the 100 meters; and Ethan Hill achieved a personal best in the discus.

Cartrette said the 4×100 meter relay team placed sixth with Landyn Clark as the first anchor, Hill as the second anchor, McCarty as the third anchor, and Conner Pogue as the fourth anchor.

He added the team is showing him and Coach Brittany Waugh that they are a track team that comes to compete and ready to make a mark in the county and state no matter their size.

“We are so proud of them and look forward to the future of Hancock Track,” Cartrette said.

Hancock will be competing in the Maryland 1A West regional in Smithsburg on Wednesday, May 13, and Friday, May 15.
