Evan L. Reichard
1931-2026
Evan L. Reichard, 93, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., passed away Friday, October 31, 2025, at the Winchester Medical Center.
Born December 22, 1931, in Bethlehem, Pa., he was the son of Harold B. and Helen L. Reichard.
He was preceded in death by his soulmate and wife of 64 years, Lois E. (Houk) Reichard, sister, Phyllis R. Hughes and brother, Neil H. Reichard.
He was raised in Bethlehem, Pa., and attended Millersville State Teacher’s College, graduating in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Arts Education. He joined the U.S. Naval Reserves while in college and after graduation served two years of active duty on the staff of the Commander of Destroyers in the Atlantic. Following his service in the Navy, he taught Industrial Arts in Anne Arundel County, Md., then joined Koppers Co. in Baltimore, Md. He transferred to the Container Machinery Sales Group in 1964 and retired in 1993.
One of his favorite stories was that a career aptitude test he took in eighth grade indicated that he was suited for a career in “selling the services of a machine shop,” a good description of his career. Evan and Lois lived in Forest Hill, Md., for 30 years before building their retirement home in Berkeley Springs, where they lived full time since 2007.
Evan had many hobbies. He was a lifelong musician, playing trumpet, French horn and E-flat alto horn in bands in high school, college, the Navy and community bands wherever he lived. He played in the Bel Air Community Band and Jazz Ensemble in Maryland for almost 40 years before moving to Berkeley Springs. After moving to Berkeley Springs, he played in the Morgan County Community Band, the Tri-State Big Band, the New Horizons Band, the Williamsport (Md.) Community Band and the Bethlehem Steel Company Legacy Band. Other hobbies included photography, birding, home repairs and building an extensive collection of model trains and a model circus, which can now be seen at the Hancock Town Hall and Community Center, Hancock, Md. He was also a Master Gardener and loved working outside. In addition to his hobbies, he was always a dedicated volunteer in the community. He was active in scouting, serving as a scout master and was the president of the Bel Air Community Band and Bel Air Recreation Committee for 20 years. After moving to Berkeley Springs, he became active in the Greenwood United Methodist Church (Greenwood Chapel), the Morgan County Observatory and the Greenwood Community Center, where he enjoyed helping to organize local events and activities.
He was a member of the American Legion, the Masonic Order, Circus Model Builders and the Circus Historical Society.
Evan is survived by his son, Karl M. Reichard (Karen) of State College, Pa., and Laura J. Goodman (Wayne) of Emmaus, Pa.; grandchildren Ronald W. Odachowski, Jr., Jesse T. Reichard and Eric T. Reichard.
Services will be held at the Greenwood Chapel from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. on February 14, with a reception to follow at the South Morgan Volunteer Fire Company.
