Dr. Paul Battaglia

1946-2025

Dr. Paul Battaglia, LTC (Ret) U.S. Army, passed away peacefully at home in the presence of family, friends, and his loving companion of recent years Pam Hoffman, on Thursday, February 20, 2025, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

Born on June 15, 1946, in Buffalo, N.Y., Paul dedicated his life to his family, education, service, and the distribution of knowledge.

Paul was a devoted husband to his late wife, Marjorie (nee Kaminski) Battaglia.

He was a loving father to his sons Paul, Greg, and Peter. He cherished his daughters-in-law Laura (nee Jacobsmeier) Battaglia and Joanne (nee Kaul) Battaglia and took immense pride in his grandchildren: Paul, Oliver, Audrey, and Tristan. His family extends to his brother John Battaglia and cousin Jeannie, whom he regarded as a sister.

He was predeceased by his brothers Tim and Chuck.

Always believing in the power of education, Paul earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Canisius College; a Master of Science from Butler University; a Masters in Operational Studies from the Army Command and General Staff College; and a Doctorate in Business Administration-Management & Econometrics and Quantitative Economics from Nova Southeastern University. These were the building blocks his distinguished career throughout his military service, later government service, and retirement positions.

Commissioned in June of 1968, Paul entered military service understanding his role as protector of national security. He served in Vietnam as a U.S. Army Ranger before transferring to the Finance Corps and finally Office of the Inspector General Department of the Army Inspector General Office. Retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel, he served with distinction and was honored with multiple Bronze Stars, Meritorious Service Medals, and other recognitions for his valor and commitment to duty. His professional contributions during government service included work with the Department of Energy, Department of Treasury, and the Department of Justice, where he played a role in enabling the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services-an initiative to advance and strengthen the practice of community policing by the nations’ state, local territorial, and tribal law enforcement agencies through information, technical assistance, training and grant resources.

Retiring to Berkeley Springs, he continued to teach and mentor as a Professor with the Florida Institute of Technology.

A Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Berkeley Springs, W.Va. An interment with military honors will take place at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C, at a later date.

Paul’s legacy of service and learning will continue to inspire those who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to all who mourn his passing.
