Former Washington County Sheriff Charles F. Mades passed away on Thursday, October 1, both the Sheriff’s Department and County Commissioners announced last Friday.
Mades dedicated more than four decades to law enforcement and public service.

He retired as sergeant from the Maryland State Police after a 25-year career. From 1986 to 2006, Mades served as Washington County Sheriff.
“Throughout his career, he demonstrated a steadfast commitment to the safety and well-being of Washington County residents and the broader community,” county officials said in a press release.
Commissioners ordered the Maryland flag and Washington County flag at all county facilities to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise Friday, October 2, through sunset on Wednesday, October 7.
County officials said Mades passing is “a profound loss” to the county and the many residents, colleagues, and law enforcement professional he served throughout his career.
“The Board extends its heartfelt sympathies to former Sheriff Mades’ family, friends, and the members of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office during this difficult time,” officials said.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said Mades leaves behind a lasting legacy of leadership, service, and commitment to the Washington County community.
“His impact on our agency and community will not be forgotten,” the Sheriff’s Department said in a social media post.
The Sheriff’s Department also extended their deepest condolences to Mades’ family, wife, friends, and “all those whose lives he touched.”
“Rest in peace, Sheriff Mades,” the department said. “Thank you for your lifetime of service.”
