Veterans of America’s military were recognized during an event held at Berkeley Springs Healthcare Center on Tuesday, August 25.
Community volunteers representing Berkeley Springs VFW post 4019 and Alderton-Dawson American Legion post 60, led by Pastor Dick Voorhaar, visited with residents, bearing gifts with cake and ice cream.
Ten veterans currently live at the skilled nursing facility on Autumn Acres Road.
Each received a commemorative plaque recognizing their military service.
Members of American Legion Auxiliary Berkeley Springs Unit 60 have long visited veterans at the facility on Veterans’ Day and other occasions.
A volunteer on Tuesday said this event was a way to get more VFW and Legion members to visit retired veterans, and to recognize them for their service.
Ludwell Fling, 97, of Hancock was a retired U.S. Air Force veteran residing at Berkeley Springs Healthcare Center. He passed away shortly after the visit from volunteers.
Fling was 16 years old when he was sent to Germany at the end of World War II. He served as an airplane mechanic and later worked at Fairchild, said his daughter Donna Risinger of Hedgesville in Morgan County.
