Great American Bike Ride rolls into Hancock with Blessing of the Bikes

by Lisa Schauer

Around 160 bicyclists, including 15 or 20 children from San Mar Family and Community Services in Boonsboro, pedaled around Hancock on Sunday, July 12 for Blessing of the Bikes.

The blessing was given by Pastor Becki Wessinger from Hancock United Methodist Church at C&O Bike Shop.

Participants then made their way up the towpath to BuddyLou’s for a free scoop of ice cream, and on to two other destinations with giveaways, before returning to C&O Bike Shop for music, games, prizes, and more snacks.

The event was produced by Main Street Hancock as part of the Great American Bike Ride, marking the future Great American Rail Trail.

Stretching 3,700 miles from D.C. to Seattle, including 184 miles on the C&O Canal Towpath, the Great American Rail Trail is just over halfway completed.

Hancock businesses including C&O Bike Shop, BuddyLou’s, Jackie’s Trail Rental, 1878 River Run, and the Red Barn co-sponsored Blessing of the Bikes and provided food.

Hancock Elementary School was also at Blessings of the Bikes, playing music, and raffling off bikes and helmets, while providing information on bike safety.

C&O Canal Trust had a booth at the event, where people gathered to play spin-the-wheel and learn more about the historic lockhouses being restored as B&Bs along the canal.
