Dr. Shelley Wheeler is a retired U.S. Coast Guard Veteran, Fire Captain, and passionate leadership educator and on Monday, June 22, she was in Hancock at Martha’s House to speak to the kids at the Adventures in Friendship camp.
Wheeler, who lives in Great Cacapon, spoke to the kids after they had returned from a short walk to Hancock Volunteer Fire Company for a tour of their station.
She asked the kids about fire safety and what to do during a fire before talking to the kids about leadership and being respectful.
After taking a few questions and comments from the kids sitting on the floor, Wheeler sat down and read from her book I’m not bossy I’m a leader.
Wheeler told the kids at Martha’s House the book was inspired and dedicated to the children of military members and first responders.
The book is about Lena and throughout her day, it’s discovered real leadership isn’t about control, it’s about care, collaboration, and courage.
After reading the book, Wheeler took more questions and signed books for the kids at the camp.
