Hit the trail for some summer ice cream

by Geoff Fox

Each summer since 2021, Washington County has had an ice cream trail that promotes locally owned ice cream shops throughout the county and this year the tradition continues.

The 2026 Washington County Ice Cream Trail began Tuesday, June 2, and runs through Tuesday, September 22, which is the last day of summer.

The trail offers residents and visitors a delicious way to explore Washington County.

As the country and county celebrates their respective 250th anniversaries, the county is joining the nation in the celebration with the family-friendly trail.

The trail offers people the opportunity to experience local businesses, discover unique destinations, and celebrate the spirit of community that makes Washington County special.

To join the trail, anyone wanting to participate can download the official Ice Cream Trail map from the county’s website at https://www.washco-md.net/icecreamtrail/ or pick up at one of the locations.

The Washington County Ice Cream Trail kicked off last Tuesday, June 2, with 16 ice cream shops within the county making up the trail. Buddy Lou’s is the lone Hancock ice cream shop on the trail.

The map includes all 16 of the participating ice cream shops and details on how to complete the trail. Buddy Lou’s is the only shop in Hancock.

There are four shops in Hagerstown; three in Williamsport; two each in Boonsboro and Smithsburg; and one each in Cascade, Clear Spring, Sharpsburg, and Maugansville.

Once the map is downloaded or picked up, participants can visit each shop for a sweet treat and get their map stamped.

Once the map is complete, it can be submitted via online submission or through the mail.

Everyone who completes the trail by the end of the summer receives a free commemorative t-shirt to celebrate their accomplishment.

Organizers said it’s a perfect way to spend the summer, support local businesses, and earn a fun keepsake.

Facebook users can also join the official Washington County Ice Cream Trail Group to stay up to date on the trail.
