For the last three years, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has been hosting a plant give away but this year it is transformed into a different event.
In the past, the plant giveaway sparked community interest in gardening and gave people a quick way to start their gardens.
The goal of the transformation is to go a step further and teach the community skills they need to start and care for their gardens at home, encouraging them to be even more self-reliant, organizers said.
The theme of the event continues to be “Plant gardens, and eat the fruit from them – Jeremiah 29:5.”
The Free Community Garden Workshop will be held on Saturday, June 6, at 200 Douglas Street in Hancock.
Registration is required so organizers have adequate supplies and food available.
Check in begins at 8 a.m. with classes starting at 8:30 a.m. Classes wrap up at 12:15 p.m.
Each class will run 45 minutes with a 15-minute break between each on. Classes will be offered during each time period and you can choose to attend one or all of the classes and which order/time period works best for you.
There will be four classes being taught by local clubs, non-profits, and seasoned gardeners.
Classes include – Culinary Herbs, Container Gardening/Raised Beds, Seed Starting/Rooting, and Natural Pest Control.
The Hancock Library will be providing garden related activities for kids during the workshop while their parents attend their classes.
There will also be information/display tables to visit between classes and attendees will receive free items and lunch at the end of the workshop.
