by Geoff Fox

A camper was destroyed last Wednesday night, February 25, as a result of a space heater mishap.

The 30-foot unoccupied camper was parked at a residence along South Street  when it caught fire.

Ten firefighters from Hancock Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched at 10:47 p.m. and had the fire under control at 11 p.m.

Deputy Fire Chief Ben Hoopengardner said there were no injuries and the fire was found by the owner.

According to the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal, the fire caused an estimated $5,500 in damages.

The trailer was used for recreation purposes only, the Fire Marshal’s Office said, and no one was displaced.

“The fire was related to a failure in the electrical service from the trailer to an oil-filled radiant electric heater,” the Fire Marshal said.

The area of origin of the fire was the main entrance wall cabinet and the fire was deemed accidental.
