1928-2026
Eastelene Florence “Essie” Hewett Marshall, age 97, of Bayville, N. J., passed away Tuesday, January 20, 2026 at her home while under hospice care.
Essie was born August 28, 1928 to parents, Wade H. Hewett and Lola C. Shriver, and lived most of her life in Bayville, N. J.
She worked for the Times Beacon Newspaper in Manahawkin, N. J. and other local newspapers during her career.
After retirement, she and her husband, Chappie Marshall whom she married on June 17, 1966, enjoyed traveling and camping especially with her cousin Voneda Swink and her husband, Henry. She always enjoyed coming to Berkeley Springs to visit family and friends and loved her cats and feeding the geese in her yard.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George “Chappie” Marshall, February 2008, and her brother Wayne Iden Hewett, July 2008.
Essie is survived by her stepchildren: Dennis Marshall, Sheri Ward (Ron), Steve Marshall (Donna), Shawn Judson, Sheila Fuhrmann and Stephanie Acosta; first cousins Barbara Magahan and James Harden Jr., and many step grandchildren and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2026 at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., with Pastor Chuck Bergen officiating. Interment will be private at Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., prior to the service.
A special thank you to Barbara, Laura, Joan and Laurie. They were her caregivers in her last years and did an outstanding job caring for her and making her happy.
