Storm drops snow, ice, polar temps on Hancock area

by Geoff Fox

Winter finally arrived in the Hancock area this past weekend as a snowstorm, stretching from New Mexico into New England, dumped snow and sleet on Hancock and plunged temperatures into record lows.

According to the Maryland Mesonet weather station in Kirkwood Park, about six inches of snow fell and temperatures in Hancock didn’t get above 16 degrees.

This is the first winter for the weather station to collect data for public record.

Schools around the region were closed on Monday and Tuesday.

County and town offices were either closed or delayed opening on Monday.

Roads in the area were snow covered Sunday with main roads such as Main Street and the interstates, were clear of snow by Monday, however backroads were still being plowed.

In some cases on Sunday, a few kids and teens were out shoveling snow for their neighbors.

One thing the snow did was give the kids, and kids at heart, a day to play in the snow and have a good time.

There are weather reports that another snowstorm could hit this weekend, but as of Monday, there hasn’t been any official forecasts.
