A tractor-trailer accident Monday evening, November 24, on westbound Interstate 70 left first responders tending to a hazmat situation and a closed interstate.
Around 6:20 p.m. Monday evening, a tractor-trailer hauling a hazardous material, possibly 100 pounds each of sodium hydrochloride or sodium hypochlorite, overturned on I-70 near the interchange with Interstate 68.
Due to the hazardous material, MDE had been notified.
According to online Maryland traffic cameras, the incident occurred just below Hancock Chevrolet.
The tractor-trailer was the only vehicle involved.
As of 8 p.m. Monday night, no one had contacted Town Manager Mike Faith regarding and health risks for the town.
Faith said Hancock Police Officer Donnie O’Brien was sitting in town keeping an eye on traffic as it was being diverted through.
As of press time, no other information was available.
