Fire Marshal investigating attempted arson

Fire crews and police were called to a residence on Hess Road in Hancock just after 12:30 a.m. last Wednesday morning for an attempted arson.

According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s office, the occupant of the single-family house called 911 and told dispatchers he was going to set his house on fire.

He continued to attempt to set the house on fire until Hancock Police arrived on scene and took him into custody. The officer put the fire out with a fire extinguisher.

The male subject was taken to Meritus Medical Center for an emergency medical and psychiatric evaluation.

No arrests were made, but could be pending the evaluation, fire officials said.

Hancock Volunteer Fire Company also responded with 15 fire fighters.

The cause of the attempted arson was incendiary and open flame common to combustibles. Fire officials said the area of origin was in the garage.

The only estimated loss was $15 for the contents.
