A Warfordsburg Man has died after striking two vehicles on I-81 in the Martinsburg area on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 11.
According to the West Virginia State Police, a Dodge truck driven by Steven Souders, 64, of Warfordsburg, Pa. was traveling North on Interstate 81 when his vehicle crossed the median and entered the southbound lanes, striking a Dodge truck driven by David Cain, 59, of Kernersville, North Carolina.
Around 4:32 p.m. Senior Trooper B. I. Mason of the West Virginia State Police Martinsburg Detachment along with other law enforcement and emergency service providers in Berkeley County responded to the resulting three-vehicle motor vehicle crash at the 11.5-mile marker southbound, of Interstate 81.
Upon conducting the crash investigation, police learned that Souders had left his travel lane, hit Cain and then continued on the roadway, striking head-on a Ford truck driven by Ronnie Dick, 33, of Inwood. The collision caused the Ford truck to flip over.
As a result of this vehicle crash, Souders and Dick succumbed to injuries sustained and were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Cain sustained minimal injuries and his sole passenger, Catherine Cain, 63, of Kernersville, North Carolina, who was in stable condition, was flown to Inova Hospital in Fairfax, Virginia for treatment of her injuries.
The southbound lanes of I-81 were shut down for approximately six hours while the crash investigation took place.
Senior Trooper Mason is conducting the investigation, which is ongoing.
