Donald Yancy
1964-2025
Donald Yancy, 84 of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Thursday, January 16, 2025.
Don was born in Clinchmore, Tenn. on November 18, 1940.
On January 26, 1964 he married Evelyn Evans Yancy. They were married for 56 years and had 3 children Kimberly Cotterman of Wilmington, N.C., Kellie Thompson-Weber of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Shaun Yancy of Hagerstown, Md. Don was blessed with 6 grandchildren who added so much joy to his life, Chad Cotterman, Carah Cotterman, Ella Thompson, Eva Thompson and Hailey Weber. Don also had two great-grandchildren, Faith and Silas Cotterman.
He was reunited in heaven with his beloved wife Evelyn Yancy, son-in-law Butch Cotterman and grandson Caleb Cotterman.
He is survived by his sister Alice Smith of Cincinnati, Ohio and son-in-law BJ Weber of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.
Don proudly served 22 years in the Navy, retiring in 1982. His time in the service shaped much of who he was, and he spoke often of the experiences that had such a deep impact on him.
Away from his military life, Don loved the simple pleasures: a glass of bourbon, a slice of pecan pie, and spending time with family. He enjoyed golf and bowling, and was a loyal fan of the Tennessee Volunteers and Washington Redskins. Don’s sense of humor, love of sweets, and stories of the past will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
The family will be welcoming visitors from 2-3 p.m. on Thursday, January 23, 2025 at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., with services at 3 p.m. with military honors provided by the Tri-State Honor Guard.
