Panther boys’ basketball shoots into season with mixed record

Hancock’s Boys Varsity Basketball team kicked off their season on December 12 against Northern Garrett, falling to the Huskies 71-48 despite a big scoring run in the second quarter with 21 points and steady shooting to the end. Senior Jacob Anderson was the game’s high scorer with 15 points, followed by sophomore Tucker Welch with 10 points.

The Panthers followed up with a tight win on December 13 over Bishop Walsh, 60-57, recovering from a deficit in the first half to apply pressure on the Spartans and emerge on top. Tucker Welch led scoring against Bishop Walsh with 21 points, followed by junior Ethan Hill, who put 13 points on the board for Hancock.

During a home game on December 17 against Hyndman Charter School, the Panthers outran the Hornets, leading with 23 points in the first quarter and never losing their lead as the won 63-28. Senior Jacob Anderson led scoring for Hancock with 19 points against Hyndman, followed by sophomore Colton Welch with 13 points.

On December 19, Hancock fell to the Berkeley Springs Indians at home, 56-49. Despite a rally in the final quarter, Hancock came up short in the cross-river rivalry. Junior Ethan Hill led scoring with 16 points in that matchup, with Jacob Anderson adding 15 to the scoreboard.

In a post-Christmas matchup, the Panthers chased after the Turkeyfoot Rams but couldn’t match their heavy offense, falling 96-45. Turkeyfoot kept pressure on the hoop, garnering 68 points in the first two quarters, making a Hancock recovery out of reach. Sophomore Hunter Kerns put 13 points on the Panther’s scoreboard, leading the way, with Jacob Anderson close behind with 12 points.

The following day, on December 28, Hancock lost a close home game against Blacklick Valley Vikings, 61-53. Once again, Hancock’s Jacob Anderson led scoring for the Panthers, sinking 16 points for the home team.

Hancock will travel to Hundred on Saturday, January 4 to play at 1 p.m. Hundred then comes to Hancock on January 11 for a home-court matchup at 1 p.m. that day.
