First snow of the season arrives

by Geoff Fox

Hancock didn’t have to wait very long for the first snowfall of this season as the white stuff (mixed with freezing rain) fell on the area on Sunday, December 15.

The first snow of last winter didn’t happen until January 6, 2024.

Around an inch or two of snow, along with ice and rain, fell throughout the day Sunday leading to a number of wrecks on Interstate 68 and Interstate 70.

Town crews were out salting and plowing the streets to keep them clear for those brave enough to travel in the conditions.

Pictures from Hancock Fire Company and Clear Spring Fire Company on social media warned drivers to stay home and showed apparatus on a snow covered Interstate 70.

Maryland State Police issued the Snow Emergency Plan for all of Washington County around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday due to the anticipated hazardous driving conditions.

On Monday, schools in Hancock were on a two-hour delay, the only schools in Washington County to open late.

Highs on Monday were expected to be around 40 degrees and Tuesday around 50.
