A picture-perfect day for a (pumpkin) derby

Hazel Frashure, 3, of Hancock poses in Widmeyer Park with her Cinderella pumpkin at the pumpkin derby on Sunday, October 13.

Local children competed in a pumpkin derby at Widmeyer Park on a picture-perfect Sunday afternoon, October 13.

The Town of Hancock Parks and Recreation sponsored the pumpkin derby, set up in the parking lot at Hancock War Memorial Library.

Martha’s House held a pumpkin derby workshop and dinner the night before, and helped run the pumpkin derby heats on the tarmac.

Pairs of colorfully decorated pumpkins affixed to wheeled axles were perched atop a wooden ramp. One after another, they careened onto the course, bumping and running, or kissing the wall in the soap box-style derby.

Ryder Montgomery, 8, a student at Hancock Elementary School, displays his pumpkin derby car at Widmeyer Park on Sunday, October 13.

“We love stuff from Miss Debbie at Martha’s House, and we love Halloween,” said Eden Frashure of Hancock, with daughter Hazel, 3, dressed as a fairytale princess and attending her first pumpkin derby.
