Civil War history reenactors encamped at Joseph Hancock Park over the weekend to give visitors a glimpse into the nation’s historic conflict.
Representing the 12th North Carolina infantry unit of the Confederacy, the company set up an authentic military camp, with period clothing, tents, and displays of Civil War artifacts.
“This unit fought in every major battle along the eastern seaboard, led by Captain Snow,” said Wayne Carter of Hagerstown, captain of the company, at its second annual encampment at Joseph Hancock Park.
Carter said he is in conversations with the mayor to bring a Civil War battle reenactment to the park next year.
Since the Battle of Hancock was more of a skirmish, Carter says they would reenact another, larger Civil War battle, if they can recruit enough companies to pull it off.
“It’s a little out of period, but its free,” said an appreciative Hazel Myers of Boonsboro about pizza donated to the event. She enjoyed her meal in a period costume.
A campfire burned as light rain began to fall on the Confederate camp. The reenactors retreated to the picnic shelter, undeterred in their commitment to spend the night as Confederates.
