Betty Jane Reed

Betty Jane Reed, 89, of Hancock, Md., affectionately known as Nan, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2024, just days shy of her 90th birthday.

Betty was born in Clear Spring, Md., to the late Harry Clopper and Ruth Miller Clopper. She was the sister of the late Harry (Bud) Clopper, John Clopper, and Helen LeNeave. Betty was the loving wife of the late Gerald “Dee” Reed for 54 happy years, and she has missed him dearly every day since he passed away in 2008.

Betty was the proud mother of Terry Reed, Tina (Daniel) Mowen, Ronna (Brian) Merson, and Jody Reed. She was a caring Grandmother to Travis (Christie) Reed, Ryan (Lauren) Mowen, Brittany (Matthew) Merson-Konya, and Matthew (Olivia) Mowen. She was the loving great-grandmother to Blake, Emma, Elliott, Lawrence, and James.

Betty worked for many years in the Hancock primary and high school cafeterias, where she touched many lives, made many friends, and pursued her passion for cooking. Betty devoted her life to her family and often showed her love by cooking delicious meals for them, canning a variety of fruits and vegetables for them to enjoy, and crocheting handmade gifts for them. Betty loved spending time with her family. Some of her favorite activities were gardening and caring for her African Violets, crocheting, doing word searches and puzzles, and going on leisurely drives around town.

Betty will be greatly missed by her family and friends, who will be reminded of her often through recipes, stories, and the love she shared with them.
