Phyllis M. Jones

1937-2024

Phyllis M. (McGrogan) Jones, age 86, from Little Orleans, Md., went to be with her Lord Jesus, the Christ, on July 12, 2024.

She was born August 31, 1937, in Philadelphia, Pa. She was the daughter of the late Daniel M. McGrogan and Louella B. McGrogan.

She was educated at Frankford High School, Philadelphia, Pa. After graduating from high school in 1955, she entered Northeastern Hospital School of Nursing (also training at Temple University for basic Sciences) and graduated September 1958 as a graduate nurse. She took her boards and became a Registered Nurse (RN) in 1959. As an RN, she worked Med Surg and in the operating room at Northeastern Hospital.

In 1961, she married Charles William (Bill) Jones, and moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked at Washington Hospital Center and was the scrub nurse and circulating nurse in whatever operating room she worked. She moved to Prince George’s County, in Maryland, and worked at Prince George’s County General Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Then she moved to Sykesville, in Carroll County, Md., and she worked at Springfield Hospital Center, a Psychiatric Hospital, in Sykesville, Md., where she, again, worked in Med Surg. She was promoted to Nursing Division Chief of four divisions: Med Surg, Geriatrics, Adolescent Unit, and City Division. Another promotion came after that where she was in charge of the entire hospital for the night shift, being responsible for the care of hundreds of patients. She was a private duty nurse for family and friends and became a Red Cross nurse, teaching a Red Cross class to the elderly so they could learn the necessary skills to take care of themselves and/or others. She was licensed as an RN in Pennsylvania Washington, D.C. and Maryland. She retired from Springfield Hospital Center in the 90’s and enjoyed her retirement.

She loved to read and crochet, and in her later years took organ lessons with her beloved husband, Bill. She was a member of the Disabled American Veteran’s Auxiliary, The Gideon’s International Auxiliary, and a member of Needmore Bible Church.

She is survived by two beloved children, daughter Phyllis Lynn Knotts (Robert), and son Matthew William Jones (Nancy), all of Little Orleans, grandchildren Brett Charles Meunier, Tyler William Jones, Laura Elizabeth Knotts, and Robert Paul Knotts III, brother Daniel William McGrogan (Sharon), and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband Charles William Jones, on March 10, 2011.

In her later years, she had a card ministry that encouraged many family and friends, especially her brothers and sisters of Needmore Bible Church.

A special thank you, with love, to her son Matt and daughter-in-law, Nancy (the daughter of her heart), for the gifts of caring for her with love and joy since she moved into her lovely ‘lower-level penthouse suite’ in 2019. Extra thanks to her daughter Phyllis and grandson Tyler for their extra care.
