An estimated 4,500 plants that included vegetables, herbs, and flowers, along with seeds and potatoes, were given away to 213 people who attended the Second Annual Community Plant Giveaway at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The two-hour event held on Saturday, June 1, was sponsored by the church, which provided 45 volunteers for the event.

The Washington County Master Gardeners and the Morgan County CEOs Garden Club helped set up information tables and answered gardening questions.

“Our goal was to serve the community and those in need while building relationships,” said organizer Wendy Weller.

Weller said congregation members grew some of the plants, but greenhouses from around the area also donated plants for the event.

She said Stoner’s Florist and Greenhouse of Hancock, Rock Lea Mulch of Williamsport, Fishers Greenhouse of Little Orleans, H&M Greenhouse in Hagerstown, Blossom Point Greenhouse in Maugansville, Buck Run Nursery in Mercersburg, and Glascock’s Produce and Mocks

Greenhouse and Landscaping both of Berkeley Springs, all donated plants for the event.

Leftover plants have been donated to the Warfordsburg Senior Center, Fulton County Food Basket, Hancock Loaves and Fishes Thrift Store and America’s Hauling For Hope.

Weller added the Hancock Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints hopes to host the giveaway again next year.
