Virginia A. Cantner

1936-2024

Virginia A. Cantner, 87, of Needmore, Pa., passed away Friday, April 19, 2024, at her residence.

Virginia was born in Needmore, Pa. on July 11, 1936, a daughter of the late Mildred N. (Brady) and C. Lester Gordon. She was the widow of Ralph E. Cantner, who she married on October 13,1979. He preceded her in death on September 10, 1993.

She worked at London Fog in Hancock, Md. as a seamstress before becoming a supervisor. She kept that position for many years before the factory closed. She later worked at Hardee’s in Hancock, Md., which she really enjoyed.

She was a member of the Warfordsburg United Methodist Church and the Fulton County Quilt Club. Virginia loved gardening and was an avid reader. She also loved working on jigsaw puzzles and would have puzzles on her dining room table from fall till spring for visitors to help her finish. She will be remembered as a very kind and loving lady who was strong and independent yet never had a bad word to say about anyone.

She is survived by her daughters Paula J. (companion of Jack Miller) Shives, of Needmore, Pa., Trudy K.(wife of Dale) Exline, of Hancock, Md., son Lester A. “Les” Smith, of Hagerstown, Md., sisters Shirley Gordon, of Martinsburg, W.Va. and Charlene Gordon, of McConnellsburg, Pa. She is also survived by three grandchildren;Matt (husband of Anita) Shives of Needmore, Pa., Ty (husband of Sandy) Exline of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., Ryan (companion of Misty Stotler) Exline of Hancock, Md., eleven great-grandchildren; Marina, Cassie, Mikayla, Reganne, Travis, Remi, Olivia, Weston, Hunter, Autumn, Boe and two great-great-grandchildren Everly and Graysen.

She was preceded in death by a brother Merill Gordon, a sister Mary Mellott, son-in-law Bill Shives and great-great-granddaughter Avery Meck.

There will be a visitation held on Thursday, April 25, 2024 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home, Inc., McConnellsburg, Pa. Funeral services will be held at the Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home Inc., McConnellsburg, Pa., at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 26, 2024 with Pastor Frank Kocek and Pastor Rick Noll officiating. There will also be one hour of visitation held prior to the service on Friday. Interment will be at Antioch Christian Cemetery Big Cove Tannery, Pa.
