Town approves $600K for splash pad contract

by Geoff Fox

In a special town meeting on Tuesday, March 26, town officials unanimously approved a bid of $600,000 bid and awarded the contract to build the town’s splash pad to Splash Pad USA.

The splash pad could be completed by Memorial Day, officials said.

In talking to Splash Pad USA officials, Town Manager Mike Faith said the company could do the splash pad cheaper, but the only complaint the company gets is buyers wishing they made the splash pad bigger.

The company said the actual value of the splash pad would be $700,000, but they are the manufacturer of the components, so the bid was cheaper.

Faith said the splash pad would be stainless steel and concrete and crews would be working seven days a week on building and in stalling the splash pad.

The only thing the town would be on the hook for would be the water and electricity. Faith said he checked the budget and the town does have money available in the
general fund to cover the difference in cost.

The town has $350,000 in funds already available from Program Open Space and a donation from the late Stanley Fulton. Faith added Splash Pad USA usually charges $9,500 for plans, but the company waived those fees.

Councilman David Kerns said the company is just waiting on the town on when to tell them to start working.

The work would run 18 working days, but there would also be the need for the concrete to settle. From the beginning of the project until it’s completed would be 30 to 45 days.

“I would say that we should have no problem opening it for Memorial Day,” Kerns said.

Mayor Roland Lanehart, Jr. said it be nice to have for National Night Out in August.
