Robert Douglas Mattingly
1948-2024
Robert Douglas Mattingly, age 75, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., passed away on February 24, 2024.
Born September 13, 1948, in Trenton N.J., he was the son of the late NASA engineer Robert Mattingly I. and Mary Ruth Mattingly.
Robert was a husband, father, and artist. He spent his life sculpting pottery, designing and drawing art for area businesses and organizations, bartending, teaching fitness, singing and playing multiple instruments in local bands and acts.
He graduated from High Point Senior High School in Beltsville, Maryland.
After a childhood accomplishing the status of Eagle Scout and being asked to perform for the Metropolitan Opera in NYC, he chose to attend Maryland University earning a master’s degree in art and music.
Moving to Berkeley Springs, W.Va. in the early 1970s with his friends, he created a space to craft art and music helping the community develop into a respected and known arts center. He drew over 30 images as logo art for the annual Apple Butter Festival, designed the “big apple” sign that advertises the event and the Chamber information booth that stands at the entrance of the Park each year.
He was an honored member of the Chamber of Commerce and inducted into the Apple Butter Hall of Fame.
Along with his pottery and paintings, his designs live on in the festival art, logos for the Berkeley Springs Antique Mall, Tari’s Café, Morgan County Economic Development Authority and countless other drawings and designs for local entities.
After Mt. Nebo Pottery he was employed at STS International, Tari’s Café as a bartender, Coolfont as a fitness coach, and Eastern Panhandle Planning and Development and Authority.
Robert loved his family. Many of his works are based on the likeness of his wife Tammy. His son Robbie, also artistically and musically talented, was the little model for the 20th anniversary festival poster & brochure.
He is survived by his wife, Tammy Lynn Mattingly and son Robert Douglas Mattingly III, his three sisters; Mary Brown, Cheryl Verfurth and Maggie Thierrien, along with their wonderful daughters and their children.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.
