1956-2023

John Samuel Evans, Jr. went to be with the Lord on September 16, 2023, after he fought a good fight with pancreatic cancer.

John was born on January 11, 1956, in Frostburg, Md., the oldest son of John Samuel Evans, Sr. and Marilyn Juanita (Winebrenner) Evans. John was the oldest of 4 brothers: James A. Evans and family of Denver, N.C.; Joel G. Evans and family of Sykesville Md.; and Jerry A. Evans and family of Frostburg, Md.

John was a man who believed in God and had great faith. He was a member and briefly acted as a deacon of Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren.

John graduated from Beall High School in Frostburg in 1974, Frostburg State University in 1978, and later earned his Master’s. His 33 year career in education with Washington County included teaching at Conococheague, Clear Spring Middle, Smithsburg Middle, and ended at Fairview Outdoor School. He retired from teaching in 2011.

After retirement, John enjoyed participating in Civil War reenactments. After becoming to ill too continue the reenactments, he joined The Blue and Gray Hospital Association, which presents living history programs about medicine and religion during the Civil War Era. He portrayed the chaplain of the group.

John is preceded in death by both parents. He passed away exactly 7 years to the day after his beloved mother passed. He is also preceded in death by his 3 much loved and spoiled Golden Retrievers: Dexter, Sadie, and Sammy.

He is survived by his 3 brothers and their families. He is also survived by his many honorary nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews who call him “Uncle John.” He was greatly loved and will be missed by all. Rest in Heaven with the Lord our Beloved.

The family will receive friends at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, Md., Thursday, September 21, 2023 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Services will be held Friday, September 22, 2023 at 11 a.m., at Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren, 20402 Beaver Creek Rd., Hagerstown, MD 21740, with Rev. Gabe Dobb officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery.
