1931-2023

Charles Edward “Charlie” Cross, age 92, of Hedgesville, W.Va., died on Tuesday, July 25, 2023 at his daughter’s home with whom he was living.

Born July 24, 1931 in Bedford, Pa., he was the son of the late Ray and Mary Banita Rankin Cross.

He was a Christian.

Charles was a graduate of Berkeley Springs High School.

He served with the United States Air Force from May 8, 1949 until his honorable discharge on November 10, 1952 during the Korean War, where Charlie was awarded the Korean Service Medal and the UN Service Medal.

He worked as a truck driver with Maryland Transport, Hall Transport, Hoffman Transport, U.S. Silica and TH Compton. After retirement, Charlie worked as a security guard at The Woods Resort and Charles Town Races and Slots.

He was a member of the Loyal Order Moose Lodge #1483 in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., where he served as past governor.

Charlie enjoyed spending time with his fur baby “Buffy” and mowing.

Charlie is survived by his children, Terri Cross-Rosenberry, Robin Bartgis, Michael Cross and Wayne Cross, all of Hedgesville, 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, two great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Irene Shuck Cross, three children, Randy Cross, Ronnie Cross and Lisa Cross Mason and three brothers, Stanley Cross, Joseph Cross and Donald Cross, and one granddaughter, Heather Cross.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. on Thursday, August 3, 2023 at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, W.Va. Services and burial for Charlie will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Charlie’s memory may be made to the National MS Society, PO Box 91891, Washington, DC 20090-1891.
