The 2023 Herbert A. Young Music Scholarship was the most successful it’s been since its inception more than a decade ago with this year’s winner, Jennifer Barnhart, receiving $1,250.
Barnhart had been a member of the Hancock Panther Marching and Concert Bands since she was in the sixth grade.
She has also participated in regional college honor bands, solo and ensemble events, and has received scholarships from the Hancock Arts Council Scholarship and Frostburg State University, which is where she will continue her education in the fall.
On Tuesday, May 16, a check in the amount of $900, the largest yet, was awarded to Barnhart at the band picnic. Since then, checks totaling $350 have also been received, bringing the total scholarship award to $1,250.
The Young family credits the alumni, friends, family and fellow musicians who made this year’s scholarship award the best ever.
They also recognized Leo Murray for his many years of promoting the scholarship on multiple social media platforms.
“Special thanks to [Susan] Mott, HHS Band Director, for her passion, commitment, and energy she infuses into the Hancock High music program,” David Young said. “Without her commitment to excellence, there would be no scholarship award.”
As one contributor told the family, “The Herbert A. Young Music Scholarship is keeping Mr. Young’s love of music alive at Hancock High School.”
