Richard Wayne Butler
Richard Wayne Butler, age 94, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died on Thursday, April 6, 2023.
Born October 21, 1928 in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., he was the son of the late Albert McKinley and Opal Fay Dawson Butler.
He was a Christian.
Richard was a graduate of Berkeley Springs High School.
In 1954, Richard began working with the United States Postal Service in Berkeley Springs and enjoyed serving the community for 30 years until his retirement in 1984. During that time, he attended Reppert School of Auctioneering in Indiana. Richard formed Butler’s Auction Service. He held many public auctions in Morgan County and the surrounding areas for 30 years. His wife, Phyllis, worked alongside him in the business as a cashier. Richard loved being an auctioneer! He loved people and had a way of making them laugh.
Richard is survived by his two daughters, Barbara Hill and her husband, Randy of Berkeley Springs, and Kimberly Shives and her husband, Rev. Robert Shives of Middleway, W.Va., four grandchildren, Shannon Light and her husband Dave of Berkeley Springs, Kristin Shives-Monaghan and her husband, Sean of Falls Church, Va., Joshua Shives of El Paso, Texas, and Zachary Shives and his wife, Laura of Bethany, La., 10 great-grandchildren, Jaden Light, Colby Light, Kinsey Light, Tyson Light, Layna Light, Luke Shives, Macy Shives, Raelyn Shives, Piper Shives and Flynn Shives-Monaghan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Virginia Kesecker Butler on December 25, 2016, one infant daughter and one son, Rev. Keith Butler.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., where the family will receive friends from noon until service time. Rev. Robert Shives will be officiating. Private burial will be at Snyder’s Bible Chapel Cemetery, Hedgesville, W.Va.
