Irene Shirley Merchant
1937-2023
Irene Shirley Merchant, age 85, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at War Memorial Hospital.
Born October 22, 1937 in Morgan County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Flim Lester and Margaret Ellen Shade Stotler.
She was a Christian.
Irene attended schools in Morgan County.
She had worked at London Fog in Hancock, Md., as a seamstress. Irene enjoyed having breakfast and chatting with everyone at McDonald’s and collecting cabbage patch dolls.
Irene is survived by her children, Brenda Lee Gloyd, Daniel Tracey and Jack D. Clark, Jr. and his wife Penny, all of Berkeley Springs; four grandchildren, Travis Allan Gloyd, Kevin Mitchell Gloyd, Dennis Brandon Clark and Tyler Michael Clark; eight great grandchildren, Damien Clark, Lillian Clark, Khloe Gloyd, Jesse Clark, Brooklyn Gloyd, Garrett Gloyd, Gracie Gloyd and Jersey Clark; one niece and one nephew.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Sylvester “Buddy” Merchant on November 29, 2006 and one sister, Bernadean Marie Youngblood.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 11, at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., with Pastor Rodney Truax officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, February 10, at the funeral home.
