Doris Jane Shives

Doris Jane Shives, Needmore, Pa., passed away January 29, 2023, with her family in attendance.

Doris was born and raised in Greencastle, Pa. before making her home in Fulton County at age 19.

She attended Browns Mill School in Greencastle.

She married her husband, Melvin (Jimmy) Shives, Jr., in June 1952. She worked several jobs including the National Lunch and Park-n-Dine in Hancock, Md. She also worked at Sagner Sewing Factory in McConnellsburg, Pa., and Jacob Brothers Sewing Factory, in Hancock.

She volunteered at Williamsport Nursing Home for 25 years before retiring.

She enjoyed going to Ocean City in the summer with her daughter Rose, crocheting, needlepoint, reading and putting puzzles together. She also enjoyed canning tomato juice and was county renowned for her canned dill pickles. She never got over the loss of her best friend, Girlie, a Boston Terrier.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by six children, Wally (Sandy) Shives, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.., Becky (Tom) Dase, Needmore, Pa., Alvin (Peggy) Shives, Needmore, Pa., Christopher (Debbie) Shives, Needmore, Pa., Timothy (Jenny) Shives, Warfordsburg, Pa. and Rose Shives, Needmore, Pa.; eight grandchildren, Brian Shives, Amanda Shives Kyne, Megan Smith, Lynn Shives, Curtis Spade, Chase Duckwall, Steve Dase and Tony Shives; thirteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Janet Shives, Mercersburg, PA.; and numerous nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Stacy Barnhart; and two sisters, Katherine Wagner and Dorothy Wagner.

The family will receive friends Thursday, February 2, 2023, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at St. Pauls Lutheran Church, 3738 Resley Road, Hancock, Md. Funeral services will follow at 12 p.m. Pastor William Stottlemyer will officiate. Interment will follow service in the adjoining church cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main St., Hancock, MD.
