Charles Edward Socks
1932-2022
Charles Edward Socks, “Pap Socks,” 90, Hancock, Md., passed away Saturday, June 4, 2022, at his home surrounded by his loved ones.
Born March 13, 1932, in Fairplay, Washington County, Md., he was the son of the late John and Freda Socks, and the widower of Elizabeth Armina Shoemaker Socks, his wife of 39 years and who passed away in 1991.
He was employed by several farms over the years in Beauford, S.C., Boonsboro, Md., and Villanova, Pa., and by Hagerstown Paint and Glass Company. He retired from International Union Operating Engineering 37, of Baltimore, Md.
He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and attended Bethel Community Church, Warfordsburg, Pa.
He enjoyed working on farms and anything related to cows and horses. He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing. As he grew older, he enjoyed playing cards and bingo with his friends.
He is survived by two daughters, Faye Elizabeth Conley, and husband Steve, and Karen Jean Conley, and husband, Charles, all of Hancock, Md.; six grandchildren, Charles “Chuck” Conley, and wife, Denise, Jamie Conley Schetrompf, and husband Jason, David Gaither, and wife Karrie, Jessica Gaither Appel, William Scott, and Jacob Williams; eight great-grandchildren, Hayden Schetrompf, Allison Gaither, Charleigh Schetrompf, Easton Conley, Colton Appel, Colin Gaither, Zander Showe, and Rylee Scott; and his lifetime companion and friend of many years, Shirley Younker.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son in 2020, Larry Charles Socks; a daughter in 2021, Nina Louise Socks Gaither; two sisters, Katharine Holland and Earlene Kinzer and two brothers, Ralph and Stanley Socks.
The family wishes to extend a thank you to Hospice of Washington County, Karen Barton, and Wanda Smith for their loving care, kindness, and concern over the past week. The family will receive friends Saturday, June 11, 2022, 10 a.m.-12 p.m., at Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main St., Hancock, Md. Funeral service will begin at 12 p.m. Rev. Joe Martin will officiate. Interment will follow service at Rose Hill Cemetery, 600 South Potomac Street, Hagerstown, MD.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Pap Sock’s name to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, Hancock, MD.
